coca cola

OK, I've decided it's time to do something I've been meaning to do for ages: boycott Coca-Cola. I decided to steel my resolve by reading the recent War on Want report on the company and it doesn't look like I can go on drinking that sweet fizzy black nectar anymore.

Coca-Cola engages in vicious union-busting activities in Pakistan, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Russia. Colombia is the most notorious example where Coca-Cola trade union leaders have been abducted, tortured and murdered by paramilitaries, but the company has also been associated with the intimidation and torture of trade unionists and their families in Turkey.

Less well known is the fact that Coca-Cola has been appropriating community water supplies in many areas of the world and contaminating land with the toxic sludge it creates as a byproduct of making coke. The company has exhausted community water reserves across India by drilling deep into underground reservoirs, drying up local wells and leaving farmers unable to irrigate their crops. Waste effluents discharged from its plants have contaminated local ecosystems in India and El Salvador. In India, Coca-Cola even cheekily offered the toxic sludge produced by its plants to local farmers as "fertiliser"!

So, no more coke for me. Fentiman's Cola if I'm ever desperate. Other less fizzy and more fruity drinks are better for me anyway. Fuck off Coca-Cola!
