There are many things I dislike about the BBCs weather graphics but this screen grab shows neatly just how useless they can be. Seriously what is the weather in this picture? Brown? Where might the weather be coming from? And where exactly am I? There’s not enough information about landmarks and landscape to help locate myself, sure I know roughly where Enfield etc. are but not well enough to situate myself with the accuracy that these maps imply is possible/ desirable.

Having said that, I should say I know and like many of the people who worked on the new BBC weather website, and I think that generally it represents an improvement over the old one. This style of map is something inherited from the god awful BBC TV maps designed and produced by New Zealand company metra.
