28, Mathematically Perfect. - November 11th, 2005 [ « ] [ » ]

My age is mathematically perfect.
What am I talking about? (1) today is my birthday and I’ve now been on this planet for 28 years and (2) 28 is a perfect number i.e. it is the sum of it’s divisors; you can divide 28 precisely by the following numbers 1,2,4,7 and 14* if you add them all up you get 28. The next perfect number after 28 is 496, so this is kind of sad too as it’s the last year my age will be a perfect number.

I went for a bike ride this morning (replacing my traditional birthday walk). Unfortunately the trip came to an abrupt end in Neasden about 2 hours into my planned 5 hour exploration of the Northwestern reaches when I got a puncture.

*for the purpose of the definition you leave out the number itself as if you didn’t there’d be no perfect numbers. Find out all about perfect numbers here

And then Neil said:

The Peep Show guys linked to above live in Kilburn, apparently, so no doubt they’ll be joining us for a celebratory ale tomorrow!

And then Dan said:

Happy Birthday Tom!
