There’s a bit in Kurt Vonnegut’s Bluebeard where an abstract expressionist (probably the books central character but I can’t really remember) is criticised in the standard ‘I could do that’ style. ‘Sure you could’ he replies then draws a brilliantly lifelike portrait of his critic and says something along the lines of ‘…but you haven’t earned the right to until you can do this’. That’s what The Minutemen sometimes seem to be saying with stuff like this; ‘we’re allowed to do an album of 40 second punk haikus because if we wanted to can do this’ its an aesthetic choice rather than a limit.
