If you’re only going up one floor you should probably take the stairs.
If you’re only going down one floor you should definitely take the stairs.

And then Dan said:
Last week, I “took the stairs” at Russell Square tube station in an effort to get a bit fitter. At the top, I discovered that there were 175 steps, which explained why I felt like I was going to drop dead of a heart attack.
And then tom said:also, doing excersise in tube stations… not such a great idea what with the high density of dust particles and stuff.
And then Dan said:Well, at the time it seemed preferable to waiting with 300 other people to get into the tiny lift. Although obviously I could barely walk when I got to the top (I managed to get 2/3 of the way up ascending two steps at a time, and even when I thought I was going to collapse, I still didn’t use the handrail - exercise is for me necessarily a mind-over-matter issue).
