Mario Update - July 3rd, 2006 [ « ] [ » ]

Nintendo and Sega pretty much perfected the 2D platform jumping genre in the early/mid ninetees, where do you go next? New Super Mario Bros. doesn’t exactly push boundaries but luckily it doesn’t really need to because in every other respect it is absolutely flawless. The dificulty curve is perfectly judged allowing you to go back and milk each level for further bonuses once new skills are mastered. The control scheme is easy to use, consistent and natural, but has seemingly limitless depths to master. The surreal landscape of Mario world is once again inventively and richly realised, and vitally there are moment of unbridled glee in there. In short its an absolute joy. It’s a shame some people are going to dismiss the game as outdated or childish (as they always do) because it’s one of the few near perfect video games. This is the reason why people fall in love with Nintendo, you can forgive ‘Mario Party 32′ and the rest of the franchise milking because it goes to pay for games like New Super Mario Bros. to be produced.
