Nintendo Pantheon pt.3: Link - June 23rd, 2005 [ « ] [ » ]

Link’s mythology is a rich and complex one. As a mortal, his travels and adventures are legendary, he is the quintessential hero. Link is particularly interesting to Nintendo scholars as the nature of his legend has changed subtely over time. In traditional tellings he is a fated individual, destined for greatness and set appart from his peers by divine purpose. More mature tellings tend to place emphasis on Link’s humble origins and young Link may even be disadvantaged in some way in relation to his peers. Link’s journeys and labors can be seen as an allegory for coming of age, gaining independence and exploring the world.

Though link is traditionally depicted with a legendary blade he is also commonly associated with boomerangs and explosives.

His most chronicled adventure being possibly the banishment of Ganon?

And then Dan said:

Where did you get these excellent quality pictures? And which is your favourite character? Enquiring minds want to know.

And then tom said:

The three I did today are my favourite Nintendo characters, pretty much in the order I’ve presented them. Over the post SNES generations, the games in which Yoshi and Wario have starred have been the most interesting and enjoyable titles (IMO).

And then Neil said:

Link is the best, in my book. Where’s Kirby, god of the 4 winds?

And then tom said:

Don’t worry I intend this series to be much longer than anybody could possibly want. Kirby and Samus are interesting, they never has any contact with the rest of the nintendo characters except in super smash bros. melee. Maybe Kirby and Vaati are manifestations of the same elemental demi-urge or something. Unfortunately I left my dictionary of symbols at home today so you’ll have to wait ’till monday for more.
