Been procrastinating about this for far too long. So, off the top of my head and against my better judgement (What next? 5 things you didn’t know about your friends emails? purity tests? which Friends character are you? (I’m Monica apparently “Your friends better watch out, because you play to win!” )) …
Simon Bookish - Terry Riley Disco (max tundra mix) Strange, yet also banging.
Sleep - Dopesmoker Incredibly you seem to be able to listen to the whole damn thing on last.fm.
Sonic Youth - Hits Of Sunshine Thousand Leaves must be the most underated SY album. (It’s hard for me not to just choose all Sonic Youth tracks. I’m fully over the ATP fiasco these days.)
Scott Walker - Get Behind Me
Sparks - The Number One Song In Heaven
If you’ve not heard this you really should check it out. A kind of Moroder-esq disco epic. Starts tranquil then really kicks in about halfway though. For some reason it always remindes me of Junior Boys too.
If you’d like to do this make a list of some songs by bands who’s names begin with S then consider yourself tagged.
And then Neil said:
Hey, arbitrary = fun, remember!
And then Neil said:Oh and Dopesmoker sometimes comes up on last.fm for me. I tend to manage to get about 20mins in before it gets a bit much, at least at work!
And then tom said:I don’t know this seems to be sort of the wrong kind of arbitrary. (I’m not complaining or anything, I mean it killed 10 minutes where I might otherwise have been thinking about carpets or something equally dull)
It just seems an odd combination of needing consideration but also having an totally arbitrary restriction. So it’s not like “write down the first 5 songs played at random from iTunes” or something which requires no thought and is totally arbitrary but is kind of like reading tea leaves in that you can sort of read something into the randomness, and develop a thread or get some kind of astrology style personality ‘insight’. But neither is it “write down your 5 favourite restaurants in London” which requires consideration and has a constraint (though significantly less arbitrary) but seems kind of purposeful.
I don’t know. Maybe it’s that if I’m going to put consideration into a selection it should be useful to someone.
I find thinking about this kind of thing interesting, it’s like trying to work out what makes something go viral on the web.
And then tom said:I find Dopesmoker to be a good working track when I really need to get down and concentrate. An hour being about my maximum concentration span and the track being repetitive enough to become background with occasional busts that allow me to do a bit of air drumming whilst waiting for a build or something.
This is only working at home mind you, when I can put it on speakers. I imagine a headphoned listen might get a little bit too much.
And then Neil said:Sadly I’m not able to play it in my office, who knows what my square students might think!
