That’s so hot right now! (pt 1 in a series (or maybe not, I don’t know)) - August 18th, 2005 [ « ] [ » ]

Ballardian consumer riots are so hot right now! Of course consumer riots are nothing new, as long ago as the 1980’s fat women in the US were crushing the skulls of toddlers to get their hands on ‘Cabbage Patch’ dolls, but those riots allways had a edge of trailer trash desperation/entertainment about them. Now, the more middle class the product the better, and that’s HOT! HOT! HOT! What’s more, these young profesional riots aren’t restricted to decadant Western states, now middle eatern monarchies are getting in on the act too!

Reports say the new showrooms have 200% more space than the old stores.

And then Neil said:

It’s fair enough, though- I’d trample on my own grandmother for the chance of a cheap flat pack coffee table from Ikea…

Seriously, it’s worrying when JG Ballard turns out to be right. What next- Slaughterhouse 5-style exhibitions of captives having sex with each other… Oh, wait a minute…

And then Dan said:

Don’t forget to carry a machete for those occasions when you just have to be the first one into the Hamley’s sale…

And then tom said:

On News 24 earlier there was a woman from the ibook riot standing next to a mangled push chair complaining about how she’d had to pick up her daughter so that she wouldn’t be killed in the stampede and how inconvenient this was as it meant she hadn’t managed to get hold of a cheap computer.

And then Dan said:

It would have made more sense to wield the child like a weapon, surely… She must be kicking herself.
